Homemade Oat Milk
A garbage-free alternative to milk while on the road.
From our stationary home, we made almond milk as a garbage-free replacement to cow’s milk but found the process was too much for van-life. Without an oven to dry out the remaining almond ‘goop’, we couldn’t reuse it to make almond butter–which leads to a lot of food waste. We’ve also found almonds to be much more expensive in Mexico, so almond milk didn’t make sense for the cost and amount of waste we would have.
This garbage-free creative challenge led us to try homemade oat milk. It’s a much cheaper alternative without food waste and a shorter process–perfect for van-life.
Here’s our go-to recipe.
Buying oats in bulk reduces single-use packaging.
We add ingredients to our single serve blender. It makes the perfect amount of oat milk to use for a couple of days.
After blending the oats with water, we use a small wire strainer to separate out the oat ‘goop’ from the milk.
We store the oat milk in a mason jar or reuse salsa jars.
