Turning Almonds Into Milk

Turning Almonds Into Milk

Reducing single-use milk containers with a homemade recipe.

We’re not big dairy consumers, so we use almond milk as a replacement for cow’s milk. We realized we were buying 1/2 gallon cartons from the store 1-2 times per week. This was not only wasteful, (single-use cartons) but sometimes filled with not-so-great ingredients (added sugars and preservatives), and costly (almost $3 per carton).

How could we reduce our waste and save money? Make our own!

We found homemade almond milk to be all-around a better option:

  1. Less Waste: We’re avoiding tossing 2 cartons into the trash can every week AND with the leftover almond meal, we make almond butter. A two-for-one deal!

  2. Better Ingredients: We know exactly what ingredients are going into our milk (almonds and water) and can add fun flavors with honey, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, dates, or bananas if we’re feeling spicy.

  3. Less Money: Buying almonds from the bulk section is MUCH cheaper than buying pre-packaged AND we’re saving single-use packaging by avoiding commercially bagged almonds. It’s a win, win!
