Garbage-free Holiday Gift Ideas

Garbage-free Holiday Gift Ideas

Giving more meaningful gifts that are healthier for us and the planet.

The holiday season has us thinking about overconsumption and the amount of garbage that comes with this time of year. Not only in the form of garbage for the planet (single-use items like gift wrapping, food containers, and packaging) or garbage for our bodies (processed foods, desserts, and candy), but the feelings of stress, expectations, or pressure to follow the holiday ‘norms’ of gift-giving.

What if we removed the garbage and expectations of buying gifts because we feel we have to and replace it with more meaningful things that will be healthier for us and the planet?

Here are a few of our garbage-free gift ideas:

  1. Spend quality time. Give an IOU coffee, movie, or dinner date to spend time with someone you care about.

  2. Give gratitude. Write a note, letter, or poem to tell someone how much their relationship means to you.

  3. Make something homemade. Instead of spending a lot of money on a gift, spend your time making something thoughtful.

  4. Share a meal together. Invite friends over to cook and enjoy a home cooked meal. If you’re not keen on cooking an entire meal, make a few appetizers to have with drinks.

  5. Give the ability to learn. Give the gift of learning with a membership to online classes (Skillshare or Udemy) or regift a book that you currently have and love.

  6. Give nature. Gift a live plant or seeds. Plants are a symbol for growth. They can produce food, clean the air, and promote good health! What better way to say I care about you?
