A garbage-free lifestyle doesn’t require you to buy more.

The best “eco-products” are the ones you already have. Reusing and repurposing are the best ways to start a garbage-free lifestyle.

Reducing garbage doesn’t have to equal spending more money–we actually spend less living this way. The trick is to avoid all the companies with great marketing tactics telling you that you need to buy their product to save the planet from plastic trash.

Why not repurpose the things you already have?

Yes, that bamboo silverware set or metal straw is a much better alternative to plastic, but if you have something at home that is already created, you’re saving on the resources to make something new and the transportation carbon footprint to get it to your door.

We fell into the same trap, initially, and bought ourselves a bamboo silverware set when we could have just thrown a metal spoon and fork from our silverware drawer at home into our backpack.

Reusing and repurposing is a fun creative challenge, here are a few tips and tricks:

  • Cut up an old t-shirt and use as replacement paper towels

  • Use silverware from home to avoid single-use plastic silverware at restaurants

  • Use glass jars from salsa, peanut butter, coconut oil, etc. you’ve bought while grocery shopping instead of purchasing brand new mason jars for food storage.

  • Reuse old spray bottles and put homemade cleaning products in them with new labels instead of buying new ones.

  • Use a backpack you already own at the grocery store instead of buying new reusable bags to avoid single-use plastic bags.
