Garbage-free Travel Tips for the Airport
Tips and tricks to reduce your garbage while flying.
Use a mobile ticket. No need to print and throw away your ticket when you can use the mobile version. Saving you the hassle of either printing the ticket before you get to the airport or paying the ticket counter at the time of your travel.
Bring reusables. Pack a two-in-one mug/waterbottle and silverware set. Paying for water is way too expensive and you can save single-use bottles, coffee cups, and lids as an added bonus.
Pack healthy snacks. Almost all food items sold in an airport are packaged, not to mention overpriced. Before you leave home, pack snacks in reusable containers (they can be used later throughout your trip for meals or leftovers at a restaurant). My favorites are nuts, seeds, homemade protein bars, fruits, or veggies. If you must eat at the airport, choose a sit-down restaurant that uses real silverware, plates, and cups. Don’t forget to ask for ‘no straw, please’ with your drink.
Skip the bathroom paper towels. Use air hand dryers instead.
On the plane, pass on the snacks and drinks. Everything you get will be packed in single-use packaging. Styrofoam cups, plastic bags, straws, lids, etc. or you can ask for flight attendants to put coffee or tea in your reusable mug.
Even though some require a bit of planning, all have saved me money and are a vote for sustainability. I’m only one person, but if we all do one or two things, we can change the world!
