Buy Local

Buy Local

Reducing your carbon footprint by supporting your community.

The phrase ‘buy local’ went straight over my head before starting The Garbage Awareness Project. I didn’t truly understand the benefits until becoming more aware of the garbage we’re throwing into the environment and into our bodies. Purchasing from local farmers and businesses is more than just a hipster stereotype:

  1. Local produce is fresher and tastes better because it’s usually sold within 24 hours of being picked. Find yours at a local farmers market in your city.

  2. Buying local means more money stays within your community. We’re able to directly contribute to the lives of those around us, in return for some great products.

  3. Local produce and foods tend to be sold in less packaging. Reducing our environmental impact by reducing the amount going into landfills and oceans.

Pro tip: Bring your own reusable bags to shop and you can reduce even more waste.

  4. Buying local products means you know where your food comes from. The person selling it to you most likely grew or made what you’re buying.

  5. Local food is usually healthier. You can become more aware of what you’re putting into your body by asking the farmer who’s selling you the product what their farming practices are.

  6. Choosing local over international brands reduces CO2 emissions by reducing food miles. Not only are you reducing the distance food travels from farm to your table, you are promoting less shipment packaging.

Aside from benefitting the environment and your health, buying local can be a fun experience! Walking through your city’s farmer’s market on a Saturday morning, dining in at a local restaurant with friends, or sipping on a cup of joe from your local coffee shop not only reduces garbage, it warms your soul.
